Many Americans think the Revolutionary War ended with the British surrender at Yorktown, Virginia. Not so! True, the stunned redcoats in Virginia lay down their arms on October 19, 1781. Legend has it that as their soldiers filed by and stacked their arms, their band played a well-known tune called "The World Turned Upside Down."
"If ponies rode men and grass ate cows
If summer were spring and the other way 'round
Then all the world would be upside down.
And so must it have seemed for the world's superpower to be defeated by a young upstart, shoestring army. (With some essential help from the French of course.)
