Historical American Flags: By law a star is added
to the US flag on the 4th of July following the admission of a state(s) to
the union. Popular belief holds that the Betsy Ross flag with its stars in
a circle was the first flag. Most scholars seem to think that the first
flag had its stars in a spread star pattern. There is no absolute proof as
to how many points the first flag's stars had or what their pattern was.
By tradition, no US flag ever becomes obsolete. Each historic flag remains
a legal flag entitled to the same respect as our current flag. Historic
flags may be flown at any time. They are especially fun for those who have
historic homes. Made to order allow about 4-5
weeks in the factory. 3x5' sizes typically come quicker.
SEWN (appliquéd) stars and sewn stripes. Appliquéd stars
are made from a flat layer of fabric laid against the blue background.
They are not dyed or printed stars nor are they the puffy embroidered
stars.
Finished with canvas heading and brass grommets.
Iron Man TM fabric is the most rugged of the
two fabrics. It will take the most punishment and hold its color the
longest. It looks like heavy cotton. It is a two ply polyester. |

Note the 15 stripes. Back then the thought was to add a
star AND a stripe for each new state. They soon realized that the great
number of stripes would result in very tall flags. The decision then
became to keep the number of stripes to the original 13 and to add only a
new star for each new state.

One of the great early compromises to keep the
struggling union together. Notice the balance. Two new states, one
