On November 4, 1979, Iranians seized our American embassy in Tehran and held 52 Americans hostage in terrifying captivity for 444 days. As the embassy was being taken and Americans were being hunted in the streets, brave Canadians, at great personal risk to their own lives and liberty, hid in their personal residences six other Americans who had managed to get away. The Canadians concealed them for almost three months. The Canadian government, its Parliament having met in secret session for the first time since WWII, then devised a plan whereby it created fake Canadian citizenship for the endangered Americans and smuggled them to freedom under Canadian passports. The Canadians then closed their own embassy and left the country the same day. They clearly had a lot to lose.
For this, Canada, and for being our good neighbor to the North, we will always be grateful.
