A public figure passes away, a tragedy unfolds, and within hours the White House has issued an order — but unless you happen to catch the right news segment, you'll miss it entirely. And then you fly full-staff on a day the nation is mourning.
I know this because I've been answering the phone at The Flag Guys for years, and that question — "Should my flag be at half-staff right now?" — comes in constantly. We monitor these proclamations anyway as part of running this business. It occurred to me: we should just tell you when one is issued.

What is a half-staff proclamation?
A half-staff proclamation is an official order directing flags to be flown at half-staff — halfway up the flagpole — as a sign of national mourning or respect. The President issues these for events like the death of government officials, national tragedies, and designated memorial days. State governors can also issue them for events specific to their state.
Who issues these proclamations?
Presidential half-staff orders come from the White House and apply to all federal buildings and military installations nationwide. Private citizens and organizations are encouraged to follow them as well. State governors issue separate orders that apply within their state. We monitor both.
How often will I get emails?
Typically 12 to 18 emails per year for federal proclamations — that's our historical average. Some years are quieter; others, especially after national tragedies or election cycles, can run higher. State-specific subscribers may receive additional notices. We never email unless there's an actual flag order to report.
Will you sell my email address?
