Hispanic Heritage Flag 3 x 5' Nylon

• The Origin Idea: In February 2023, Elisa Bender (Board Member of Hispanic Festival, Inc. and President of the Latinx Arts Network) noticed St. Louis City Hall raising a flag for Black History Month. Realizing that no unified, modern flag officially existed specifically for Hispanic Heritage Month, she spearheaded an initiative to create one. [1]
• The Design Team: Funded by the Regional Arts Commission, Hispanic Festival, Inc. commissioned local artist José Garza. Over a span of four months, Garza collaborated closely with a committee of local community stakeholders to ensure multiple cultural perspectives were integrated. [1, 2, 3, 4]
• The Unveiling: The flag was officially unveiled to the public on August 23, 2023, at the Missouri History Museum. It was flown outside St. Louis City Hall for the first time on September 15, 2023, marking the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. [1, 2, 3]

• The Dark Blue Field & Sky: Represents loyalty, the sky, and overarching unity. [1, 2]
• The Eight-Pointed Star: Acting as a guiding light, it represents hope, new beginnings, and a bright path forward for the community. [1]
• The Red, Orange, and Gold Zigzag: Intentionally mimics a mountain range—inspired by features like the Sierra Madre. This pattern symbolizes the geographical terrains connecting North and South America, as well as core values like perseverance, family, courage, and sacrifice. [1, 2, 3]
• The Base Stripes:
  • Light Blue: Represents shared rivers and bodies of water.
  • Green: Symbolizes the land and prosperity.
  • Brown: Commemorates soil, deep roots, and the beautiful diversity of ethnicities across Latin American culture. [1, 2, 3]
