Historical flags have been part of The Flag Guys since the beginning. Our Union Civil War collection brings together the corps and regimental flags of the Union army and the star-count flags of the war years, for collectors, reenactors, museums and anyone flying a flag with family history behind it.

Union Corps and Regimental Flags

The Army of the Potomac identified its corps headquarters with guidons. The 1st Corps was led by Joseph Hooker at Antietam and John Reynolds at Fredericksburg, then by Abner Doubleday at Gettysburg after Reynolds was killed on the first day. Winfield Scott Hancock’s 2nd Corps helped repulse Pickett’s Charge. The 5th Corps included the 20th Maine, which held Little Round Top.

Our regimental flags include the Irish regiments of Massachusetts and New York (the 9th and 28th Massachusetts and the 37th and 69th New York), the 20th New York, the 52nd New York German Rangers, and the 4th Regiment U.S. Colored Troops.

The Stars and Stripes of the War Years

The U.S. flag changed twice during the war. The 33-star flag flew over Fort Sumter in April 1861. The 34-star flag, with Kansas added, became official on July 4, 1861. The 35-star flag, with West Virginia added, followed on July 4, 1863.

We carry each one, along with the 34-star E Pluribus Unum Union support flag.

Campaign and Commanders’ Flags

In the 1860s it was common for candidates to put their portraits and slogans on flags. Our collection includes the Grant and Colfax campaign flag from 1868, the General Burnside flag, and the Civil War hospital flag.

How many stars were on the American flag during the Civil War?

The flag had 33 stars when the war began in April 1861, which is the star count of the Fort Sumter flag. It went to 34 stars on July 4, 1861, after Kansas became a state, and to 35 stars on July 4, 1863, for West Virginia.

What is a Civil War corps flag?
