Deseret Flag (The Flag of Utah 1851)

The Deseret Flag is associated with the proposed State of Deseret, a provisional state formed by Mormon settlers in the Great Basin region after the Mexican–American War. When the territory applied for statehood, the application was denied, and it was not until 1896 that Utah was formally admitted to the Union.

The flag is believed to have featured a beehive, a long-standing symbol of the Mormon values of community, cooperation, and industriousness—an emblem that continues to appear on Utah’s current state flag today.

It is important to note that no known image of the original Deseret flag survives. All modern depictions, including the design shown here, are speculative, based solely on period newspaper descriptions. Even elements such as the number of stripes (often shown as thirteen) are uncertain and may not reflect the original flag’s true appearance.
