Independent Company Newburyport Flag

The Independent Company of Newburyport flag is associated with the Massachusetts port town of Newburyport, home to Matthew Thornton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

The militia’s flag featured thirteen armored (mailed) hands, each gripping a link in a chain. Together, the links form an unbroken circle, symbolizing the unity of the thirteen colonies and their shared commitment to a common cause.
